hahaha couldn't even go further than level 8 without closing the game out of complete guilt. Absolutely well done. I see the comments talking about the level 9 dog and on the one hand I wonder what it looks like, on the other I don't have it in me to inflict it on those poor dogs nor on myself.
this was the worst game about dogs I've played for all the right reasons. it just made me... so uncomfortable. pretty quickly in, i knew what this game was gonna be about, but i kept playing and it made me feel so... guilty. i did this to these poor dogs. even if you drew the horse to water, the horse is the one who drinks. and god did i want to spit it out.
10/10. i would never recommend this to a friend for the same reasons it's so impactful.
edit: this is supposed to be a nice comment about how the game's messages affected me but im mentally ill so im really sorry if this is mean
Any other idle/clicker games like Ruff Times, where it has dark themes but longer than Ruff Times? Enjoyed the horror aspect of a simple, cutesy clicker game. Been searching for one and I haven't found any, like a game that makes you question what your doing not just "serial killer idle"
Extremely late reply but for anyone else who might be interested: A Dark Room is a relatively long incremental game with RPG elements that has some darker themes in it (as in, some of the player's choices have darker implications), although they're mostly conveyed through background text/snippets. It may not exactly feel the description but it's worth checking out if you enjoy the integration of narrative elements in idle games.
I feel it could have worked better if the level 9 dog was.. let's just say, unmoving. Also a little more realistic looking. And maybe with a big bow on it, to fit with the level 8 dog.

I'd just like to say that this game was both an amazing and humbling play! It may or may not have been your intention, but it definitely brings to light the horrors of the breeding industry and how it can go much too far. A wonderful, short play with a very important message.
I know unhealthy dogs taking longer to get to food is supposed to be part of the challenge, but, when I keep losing a level 5 dog when, even though I dragged the food to a couple pixels away from its feet, a level 2 dog gets to it instead, it should probably be turned down a notch.
Other than that, I do like the game.
Probably should have a button to restart, quit, or make it not full screen.

But in all sincerity this game is worth a play. It gets very unnerving and teaches it's lesson incredibly well. I would say more, but people should play it to see everything for themselves.
As a biologist, a geneticist, who studies domestication and domestic animals, this is an excellent demonstration of a very important problem. I wouldn't call it a "dilemma," i'd call it a "big fucking problem," but my point is this game portrays it very, very well.

I especially enjoy that the ill-bred dogs are slower to run to their food. So many pieces like this rely purely on visuals to indicate that these dogs are unhealthy, so it's wonderful to feel and experience as a player, on a practical level, how being ill-bred and unhealthy is leading dogs to early deaths. Plus the shaking of the VERY high-level dogs makes it hard to tell if they're eating properly... It's much more show than tell in a way that I feel games like this often fail. Congrats! Very smart game design.
Oh wow thank you!! This was actually made for a university assignment where we had to make a game for impact. A lot of research was conducted around the topic prior to game production, so we are very glad we were able to do the issue justice in the end!

how come i had to urn off my pc to leave the game Esc never worked
If you're on a windows computer use the windows key and it should close it and then you can click on it in the toolbar again

I love that it brings the obscure side (aka the only side) of the breeding industry. Its fits so well with the "mutts aren't needed anymore!"
